Blugold Dining collected 3,087 pounds of food and $1,184 in cash from UWEC students, faculty and staff on Nov. 17 during its Helping Hands Across America food drive at Davies Center.

The food and cash has been donated to Feed My People Food Bank in Eau Claire, benefiting senior citizens, single parents, the working poor, the homeless, the mentally ill and others across the Chippewa Valley. More than 14,500 people each month – 38 percent of them children – rely on food from Feed My People programs. The past nine years, the Helping Hands Across America food drive has produced 32,443 pounds of food and $3,455 in cash for Feed My People.

Helping Hands Across America Food Drive Coming to Davies Center on Nov. 17

Blugold Dining invites UWEC students, faculty and staff to fight hunger and help those in need across the Chippewa Valley by taking part in its Helping Hands Across America food drive, on Nov. 17 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Davies Center main entrance, across from the Service Center.

All nonperishable food and cash collected will be donated to Feed My People Food Bank in Eau Claire, benefiting senior citizens, single parents, the working poor, the homeless, the mentally ill and others. Last year’s Helping Hands Across America food drive produced 4,280 pounds of food and $1,001 in cash for Feed My People – the equivalent of 7,858 meals.

Feed My People suggests donations of canned fruit, canned vegetables and peanut butter. Food can’t be expired and can’t be damaged in any way that affects its suitability for consumption. Food that’s not labeled won’t be accepted. Nonperishable food will be available for purchase (at cost) inside Marketplace at Davies Center on Nov. 17. Donations of bottled water are also permitted.

“Blugold Dining is committed to raising awareness of hunger – a problem that affects thousands of people right here in our backyard,” Blugold Dining Resident District Manager Christian Wise said. “We’re again coming together as a campus to provide much-needed support to those suffering from hunger in our community, and we hope this effort will help get more people involved in this important cause.”

Bands, beads and beignets!

Mardis Gras marks the calendar in New Orleans as the climax for event for many. When it comes to Mardis Gras week, no one can mistake the deep connection between cultural music and festival heritage that pours out of that city in bright colors and crazy costumes. With the celebration’s zesty food, rich history and of course famous parades, Mardis Gras week makes New Orleans the pin on the map many vacationers! This past Mardis Gras celebration (Tuesday, February 17th) we brought New Orleans up north for the evening and had celebration of our own. Featuring traditional creole foods to like begnies, jambalaya, grits, red beans and creole rice our cafeteria was a cultural sensation of flavor and rhythm. Decorations covered the walls and windows of Riverview in purple, green and gold as students came through the Center Plate line to get a taste of traditional creole dishes. And what brings Mardis Gras more to life than beads and jazz? UWEC’s Forward Brass Band lit up the place with their snazzy renditions of contemporary songs. Tunes like “Sweet Caroline”, “Trouble” and “Can’t Hold Us” were joined with fist pumps and cheers. Students were exited and surprised at the new mask Riverview was wearing for Mardis Gras – this was the place to be! To top it all off we had our staff give away beads to students as they walked in. The night was a huge success; many “Ooo!’s” and “Ahhh’s” were exclaimed and plates were cleaned. Riverview even had the privilege of hosting our dean of students, Joe Abhold for a spicy bowl of Jambalaya. All in all we had a blast at Riverview Café and can’t wait to throw some more beads next year!
