Crunch Time!

Finals are almost here so Blugold Dining has planned a couple of ways to help you get your studying hours in and consume some brain food. First of all, we will start late night studying in Hilltop Food Court Monday, December 7th with free coffee available the last three hours it is open. There are plenty of tables to spread your books out, free wi-fi and it is the perfect place to grab great snacks to fuel you through the night. The Hilltop Food Court will be open December 7-10 and 14-15 until midnight and will stay open until 10pm December 11-13th for you convenience.

The Annual Night Owl Breakfast will be taking place at Riverview Café Monday, December 14th from 9pm to 1am. Refuel after your first round of finals Monday night with some scrambled eggs, french toast, sausage and much more.

Lastly, make sure to swing by the Library Grounds on your way to the Library and take advantage of our coupons available at the Library Grounds counter. Add a free shot of espresso to any espresso drink, take $1.00 off any Grande house coffee, and $.50 off any bakery item with these coupons.

Riverview Dinner Hours Extended

Due to discussions in the Dining Committee the Riverview Café will be extending the main entrée for dinner from 8 to 9pm starting November 30th. Riverview will also be lowering the cost of late night dining after 9pm to the lunch rate of $5.69 for cash and $5.12 for Blugold and Declining Balance. If you are interested in voicing your opinion or just curious about what goes on in the Dining Committee; join us Thursdays at 4pm in the Potawatomi Room (unless specified otherwise) in the Davies Center.

New To-Go Program

Starting November 30th Blugold Dining will introduce a new environmentally friendly to-go program in the cafeterias. The new to-go program conforms to the goals of the strategic plan of the University to become more green and sustainable. The Riverview Café will only be offering reusable to-go containers; no disposable containers will be available. The Terrace will offer both the reusable and the disposable containers. The disposable drink cup and cutlery set will still be available with the to-go containers. There is no cost for the reusable to-go container, but a small refundable deposit is required. Just bring your used container back and we will give you a new one. If you are done with your reusable to-go container, bring it back and you will be refunded your deposit. All deposits will be refunded based on the method of deposit. If you used your Blugold Card to pay for the deposit that is how you will be refunded. If you lose or damage the container your deposit will be forfeited.

The hours of the to-go program will be changing as well. The Terrace will have the to-go option until close every night and Riverview Café will have the reusable to-go container until 9pm. There will be no late night options in the cafeterias. The to-go option will remain at one to-go a day in both cafeterias. The 50/50 Block Meal Plan Recap

We had a couple of questions about the new 50/50 block plan that we would like to go over with you. The 50/50 block plan is a meal plan that gives you 50 cafeteria meal “swipes” and $50 to use in any retail dining location for only $300. This plan DOES roll over from year to year until you end your relationship with the university. The 50/50 Block Plan is available to all students living off campus. Chancellor’s Hall and all faculty. This is a great way for you to grab a meal when it is convenient for you. American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month. “Pride in our heritage. Honor to our ancestors” is this year’s theme. Los Angeles, CA is home to the largest number of American Indians with a population of 150,000+.

Introducing the New Block Meal Plan

Blugold Dining is offering another Meal Plan option for students living off campus, Chancellor’s Hall and faculty – The 50/50 Plan. The 50/50 Plan provides you with 50 meal (swipes) to be used in either cafeteria for breakfast, lunch, dinner and theme meals plus $50 dining dollars for retail use. We know that you are busy with classes, work and other events. This plan gives you the convenience of a full meal anytime that you are on campus and a large variety of food to choose from.

National Pretzel Day October 26th

Did you know that the average American eats two pounds of pretzels a year? Monday, October 26th is National Pretzel Day, so to celebrate we are offering $.50 off your pretzel purchase and some free samples at Pretzel Logic in the Hilltop Food Court, and in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Pretzel Logic will sprinkle pink salt on the pretzels.

Here are some fun facts about pretzels: The largest pretzel ever made was 40 lbs and measured 5 feet across. It was made in Pennsylvania where coincidentally the average annual pretzel consumption is 20 pounds per person. More than $550 million worth of pretzels are sold in the US annually; 80% are made in Pennsylvania, where the hard pretzel originated.

Dulany Themed Buffets

You asked for it and you got it! SubConnection at the Hilltop Center Food Court will have new hours of operation. Starting Friday, September 25 SubConnection will open at 11am Monday – Friday and 12 noon on weekends. The closing times will remain the same.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage month started September 15, 2009 with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua celebrating their independence. Mexico and Chile are not far behind celebrating their independence September 16 and 18. The estimated Hispanic population of the US as of July 1, 2008 is 46.9 million, making people of Hispanic origin nation’s largest ethnic minority. In honor of Hispanic Heritage month The Terrace and The Riverview Café will be preparing special meals featuring signature flavors of Chef Roberto Santibanez. There will be two dinners (September 23 and October 7) and two lunches (September 30 & October 14). Sign up at either cafeteria on the special meal dates to win a cookbook by Chef Roberto Santibanez. One cookbook will be given away at each cafeteria. Names will be drawn by Friday, October 16.

The Dulany will also be serving their annual “Sabor Latino!” lunch Thursday, October 8 from 11-2. Reservations are recommended. Talking Trash

Hopefully everyone is having a smooth first full week. All of you have probably noticed our many garbage receptacles around the dining areas. It may seem confusing at first, but please take the time to separate and throw your trash items in the appropriate bins. Signs with pictures and descriptions of what can be disposed of in each are located on top and on the front of the bins. All food scraps are compostable along with our eco-friendly paper plates, brown napkins, clear plastic cups, straws, utensils and salad to-go containers.

UWEC is proud to be selected as the first commercial composting site in Eau Claire and we are trying our best to become more environmentally responsible and conforming to our University’s strategic plan to become an eco-friendly operation. If you have any questions about what you can compost or recycle please let us know!

Students, faculty and staff will find a number of exciting changes in our dining areas this fall.

In The Terrace, the seating capacity has been increased and new food options will be available beginning this semester. The a la carte dining area known as the Little Niagara Inn, which included Ultimate Baja and Salad Toss, now is incorporated into The Terrace, and its specialized menus are now part of the cafeteria.


Guests visiting The Terrace will find main entrees, exhibition cooking and a deli sandwich station in the main serving area along with ice cream and desserts. Soup, salad bar, cereal and beverages will be available next to the main seating area and our grill, pizza station and a new pasta bar will all be located in the Little Niagara Inn.

Marketplace, the food court on the lower level of Davies Center, also has been remodeled and will offer additional menu options formerly found in Ultimate Baja and Salad Toss. Intermezzos, the dining area centrally located in the Blugold Room, has been expanded to offer soups and a greater variety of sandwiches and other grab-and-go options for lunch patrons.

Welcome the New Executive Chef

Soon the campus will be buzzing with students again, back to UWEC for another exciting school year. Blugold Dining has made quite a few changes over the summer for you to explore. We will go into more detail about those changes in future blogs. We also want to take this time to welcome our new Executive Chef Tim Grayson. Chef Tim received his Masters Degree in Hotel and Hospitality Management from the prestigious, Ivy League Cornell University. He comes to us most recently from Rio De Janeiro, but calls Little Rock, Arkansas home. He currently owns a restaurant in Northern Brazil named Paladar, which means "Taste" in Portuguese. Tim began his diverse career at Walt Disney World in Orlando but has since worked worldwide and on several cruise ships. We look forward to experiencing Tim’s many culinary and cultural influences from the different countries he has explored along his culinary journey. Tim is married and has a daughter and granddaughter in Nashville, TN. Please join us all as we welcome Chef Tim Grayson to our campus.

Sustainable Food Panel Discussion

Students, faculty, staff and the general public are invited to attend a panel discussion focusing on sustainable food initiatives at UW- Eau Claire and the City of Eau Claire. The panel will be held Tuesday, April 14th at 5pm in the Presidents room of Davies Center.

Panelists will include Christian Wise (UW-Eau Claire Blugold Dining Services), Rick Beckler (Sacred Heart Hospital Hospitality Services), Dylan Thomas (UW-Eau Claire Campus Kitchens Project) and Aaron Ellringer (Just Local Food).

Viennese Ball 2009 - Employment / Group Fundraising Opportunity

The Blugold Dining catering department is currently looking for students interested in working at the Viennese Ball, April 17 & 18, 2009.

This is a great opportunity to see the wonders of the ball and earn some extra money at the same time. Students can choose from an array of jobs including, but not limited to, cocktail wait staff, bartender, busser, bar runner, torte server, cashier, and deli attendant. There are also a variety of positions availablefor those looking to work behind the scenes.

The shifts tend to start in the early evening and run until clean up is completed. This is a great opportunity for a group fundraiser as well, and groups are encouraged to contact the Catering Director, Terri Knudtson at 836-2632 or knudtstl@uwec.edu, if they are interested in signing up or visit our office at 227 Davies Center, across from The Terrace.

Spring Break Hours

A number of Blugold Dining locations will be closed or have limited hours as we get closer to Spring Break. On Wednesday, March 11th, Café a la Cart in the Haas Fine Arts Center will close and on Thursday, Café a la Cart in Hibbard Hall will close. Both Café a la Cart locations will reopen on Monday, March 23rd. Also on Thursday, Library Grounds will close for the duration of the break and the Hilltop Center Food Court will close one hour earlier at 11pm. On Friday, The Dulany and Higherground will be closed and a number of dining locations will be closing early. Intermezzo’s Café will close at 1pm, Marketplace at 3pm, Green Bean at 1pm, The Terrace at 1:30pm and the Hilltop Center Food Court at 8pm.

During Spring Break, Marketplace in Davies Center will be open featuring Blu Plate Diner, Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 3pm. On Sunday, March 22nd, The Terrace, Riverview Café, Marketplace and the Hilltop Center Food Court will reopen with limited hours.

The Dulany St. Patrick’s Day Buffet

On Tuesday, March 24th, The Dulany will host a special Mardi Gras theme buffet. Featured entrees and sides include Jamaican chicken curry with papaya salsa, tilapia with mango tomato sauce, Creole meatballs, New Orleans crab cakes, sweet potato casserole, jerk barbecue chicken salad and much more!

The buffet is $8.05 (plus tax) per person and will be open from 11am to 1:30pm. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made by calling the Blugold Dining office at 836-5261.

All large salads from our salad bars in Little Niagara and the Hilltop Center Food Court will be on sale for just $3.99 all week. Each self-serve salad bars feature a variety of greens, vegetables and dressings. Hot soups are also available!

Parfait Bar
The Terrace Cafe will feature a create-your-own parfait bar from 7 to 9am, February 16-20th, in addition to our regular all-you-care-to-eat menu. The parfait bar will feature a variety of yogurts, fruits, nuts and other toppings. Cash price for breakfast is $4.90. February Theme Buffets in The Dulany
The Dulany will honor Black History Month with a special theme buffet on Thursday, February 19th and celebrate Fat Tuesday with a Mardi Gras theme buffet on Tuesday, February 24th. Free Coffee Samples

New at Pacific Traders

You can now "Create Your Own Entree" at Pacific Traders in Marketplace. Each entree is made to order with your choice of meat or tofu, fresh vegetables and sauce. All entrees are served with your choice of white or brown rice. Pacific Traders is open weekdays from 10:30am to 2pm.

Blugold Dining Composting Program

This January, Blugold Dining in partnership with Veolia Environmental Services, has become one of the first commercial facilities in Wisconsin to offer composting as an environmentally friendly, waste disposal alternative.

The composting program, which has been in development over the past several months, will conserve space in local landfills as well as reduce methane emissions by turning food and other waste materials into nutrient rich soil.

Compostable items include food scraps (no bones), Green Mountain coffee cups, lids and stir sticks, eco-friendly plates and napkins, and corn based soda cups, lids, straws, knives, forks and spoons. Other items such as soup and salad containers may be added to the list of compostable items as they become available.

Guests may dispose of food and several other compostable items in green composting containers located throughout Davies Center and Hilltop Recreation Center.

Steak Lunch

All students, faculty and staff are invited to our next Steak Lunch on Thursday, January 29th in the Terrace and Riverview Café. We will be serving your choice of grilled steak, fried shrimp or chicken, plus side dishes, soup, salad bar and desserts. The lunch runs from 10:30am to 1:30pm. We hope to see you there!
