Where does the money for these promotions come from? As a student living on campus who is FORCED to purchase a meal plan I would like to think the university is doing everything it can to maximize benefits while cutting costs. When university dining gives away gift cards I don't feel this is happening. I feel like the extra 100 dollars (20 hours at work after taxes) I have to give the university each semester is being spent on frivolous contests.

Between spring semester and fall semester the cost of a meal plan rose by 100 dollars. When accounting for 3,000 students this is 30,000 a semester.

I have three ideas how this money could otherwise be used:

1. Why not use this money to lower our costs rather than give away fifty dollar gift cards for university dining (that equal about 20 dollars in a grocery store)?

2. Why can't we give this money to charity? Lots of food banks are desperately low on supplies while Sodexho swallows up our unused meals every week.

3. Why not use this money to give every student a reusable cup at the beginning of the semester to save on compostable cups. Even though the cups are compostable theyre still waste.

I apologize for my typo, its not thirty thousand a semester, its three HUNDRED THOUSAND a semester.

Fact: Sodexo makes millions $$$ feeding junk food to children in public schools and on our campus. The public school children and campus dwellers have one thing in common: Very little choice as to whats available to them to eat. This in turn leads to obesity and health problems. Obesity is one of the major causes of skyrocketing insurance rates in this country. Skyrocketing insurance rates mean we pay 7,000 a year per capita on health care in the United States. This is more than double the per capita health costs of nations with free health care.

How about we make healthy choices affordable on campus? I can't afford to eat five dollar salads every meal. I can't avoid eating overprocessed red meat on campus without eating the same thing every day.

Sodexo is neither healthy or environmental.

Thanks for your e-mail.
Actually, the money for promotions is a way to provide an incentive to market our new concepts to students to get them to try new locations. The total amount for our promotions in a year is less than 1% of the total revenue generated here on campus. We apologize if they are offensive to you, but the intention behind the promotions is to generate a lively and fun atmosphere. We actually donate a lot to charity here on this campus and Sodexo is hugely supportive of the founding of a Campus Kitchens Project on Campus.
We actually thought about giving reuseable cups away, but decided to sell them. The bookstore sells them as well. In addition, every location allows the use of your own reuseable cup at a lower price.
So please, feel free to utilize the refill option at all locations.

Actually, Sodexo has led the way to eliminate carbonated beverages and "junk" food, e.g. potato chips and candy, out of K-12 schools. The level of choice on this campus is increasing by the month. Very few students take advantage of being able to use the dining centers' to go policy, where one can put together a to go container and take with them a variety of things offered in the cafeterias. For $3.50 or a meal swipe you have some of the healthiest food available, to supplement that choice with pure organic foods that are pre-made daily is a choice not found on very many campuses, but we have that choice here.
In addition, there is white meat available at nearly every location and at each dining center there is always a vegetarian entree option at lunch and dinner.

Thanks for writing and if you would like to talk further please feel free to come by my office at 227 Davies Center.
